What could someone learn about a person— a young girl— struggling to carry an invisible load which is growing heavier, if the only access to her world was through letters?
I learned a lot…
To whom it may concern,
Alex’ little brother was sick over the weekend. We tried to keep Alex away from him, but I fear it was too little too late. She woke up early Monday morning with a fever and vomiting. The symptoms continued through Wednesday, and though she was fever free for 24+ hours by Friday, the poor child was exhausted. She slept the entire day.
As such, please excuse Alexandra’s absences the week of April 20-24th, 2009. Additionally if there is important course work which can be made up, please send that home, and we will spread it out over the remainder of the week, and Alex will return it next Monday.
Respectfully,
John Cameron
Editorial note:
This is a monthly serialized epistolary fiction and subsequent entries will be published mid-month until Alex’ story is complete. More of Alexandra’s story may be read here.
This is a work of fiction and of my imagination alone. Any resemblance to actual persons or events is mere coincidence.
Well, I had my first technical issue with this publication. For folks who received the latest email for "To whom it may concern," you got a glimpse at something scheduled to release in a few weeks. I have some travel coming up, so I was playing around in the scheduling section. The glitch is resolved (totally user error and not Substack), but I want to say sorry for any confusion the email caused.
If you got a look at what's coming down the pike and are wondering what in the heck that shoulder pic is... Well, stay tuned. It is scheduled to release on 1 March ;)
Again, sorry for the glitch. Just a crayon eating Marine here, trying to wrangle Skynet and share some writing in the process.
Semper Fidelis,
Aaron
